Latest SP2 Flaw Bypasses IE Security Zone August 22, 2004

Okay another flaw that requires user interaction in order to be exploited. It needs to be downloaded and run. Once again Microsoft is not calling this a serious flaw, which they dont need to. this is knitpicking folks and these are not “flaws” that can be executed so easily.

Very, very good news I have been waiting for a good alternative to MySQL and I will be looking at this for a possible migration to Postgre, I already use it on Linux some but the Windows version is supposed to have some excellent features.

Netscape 7.2 (Click to Enlarge)
Netscape has released version 7.2 of its browser suite. Netscape has always been one of my favorite browsers and it is good to see that its still going. this version is Mozilla 1.7 rebranded with some added features. New features include:
Netscape Toolbar,
Improved vCard support for Mail
Security enhancements and cosmetic changes.
They also took out a lot of the extras such as WinAmp, Viewpoint MP as well as some others. I have been using 7.2 almost exclusively all day and its very intuitive. Yes the OS Im running is still Windows XP, Im just running the classic skin.
Download Netscape 7.2 here
The Offline installer, ie the Full Installer can be downloaded here
I will be working on a review to see if its worth it or not to download.

Newham and Microsoft sign 10-yr deal August 16, 2004

Newham and Microsoft sign 10-yr deal. Good news for Microsoft, bad news for Open Source advocates apparantly, especially since ‘experts” told California to gow with Open Source for exactly the same reason newham went with microsoft, all a marketing game people. One quote from the register that I liked:
” the study was indeed funded by the software firm . One of the main conclusions of its research was that as well as being cheaper than OSS, Microsoft is more secure than the open source alternative. “
Does the Open Source community really expect a consulting firm to do an analysis for free? I love the way when people disagree with a study they blow it off as being funded by Microsoft, its noteworthy to add tho, that Netproject, an Open Source consulting firm, didnt recommend linux, theydidnt reccomend FreeBSD, they recommended Microsoft Windows XP and Server 2003 with Exchange, they recommended OpenOffice , MySQL as the database and Open Source messaging and collaboration and they recommended Mozilla Firefox instead of IE but they still recommended Windows.
Grouping in IE August 15, 2004

Steve Novoselac sent me an answer to a question that I had about grouping in the taskbar, thanks Steve. To accomplish this you need to have TweakUI and since TweakUI only works with XP SP1 or higher, you need to be updated. Here is the process:
Start —> Run. In the run Dialog Box type ‘tweakui’ hit enter.
when TweakUI opens click on ‘taskbar and Start menu’ expand the column by click on the ‘+’ symbol and click on ‘Grouping’, the last radio button lets you decide how many windows need to be open befor you start grouping.
California urged to use open source, VoIP August 15, 2004

According to this report a panel of 275 “experts” and independant analysts are asking California Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger to adopt Open Source software citing openess of the code and of course price. They also claim that closed source software offers “superior security to proprietary software” first i would like to know who these “experts” were and what the hell they are smoking. i find it funny that HP-UX, AIX, OpenVMS and Mac OS X are more attack resistant and secure than Linux, yet these experts claim open source is more secure? Bullshit. Over the past 5 years i have been hacked twice, both of these times SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 was the victim even with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 boxes on the same subnet. It also might be nice to mention that HP-UX, AIX, OpenVMS and Mac OS X are all closed source.
