News.com has an interesting article on the drop of enrollment in computer science departments. This is a shame but I remember when I first got involved in Tech, about 1994, getting a job in the computer industry was like hitting the jackpot, you won the lottery. Most of my friends in school at the time were computer geeks and we all dreamed about getting jobs in tech, while playing Leisure Suit Larry, now a days most of those same friends have moved onto something else, changed carreers or just dumped tech like a 5 dollar whore. For those of us that do stay I believe the demand will rise again for us, keyboard samurai, hehehehehe. But the problem right now is that there is no incentive in Tech. Companies are laying off like crazy, everyone expects you to give away your work for free and just charge for tech support, they want to trash software patents so that the inventors cant patent their work and get paid for it so whats the incentive? Who cares about ” touting the excitement of trying to magnify human intelligence through machines” Show me the money motherfucker. A lot of things influence the oppurtunities in tech and right now it looks like a dead end. So why do I stay involved in tech and CS? Because, I luuuuuuuuuuuuv iiiiit!!!!!
