The creators of FreeBSD have said that they will also target FreeBSD to desktop users as well as server admins.

My Take; I think FreeBSD is ready for the desktop, although complicated to install there are some Open Source applications these guys can use simplify the installation.  Functionality wise FreeBSD is great and in my opinion on par with Linux, and now that Java is available it brings FreeBSD up to speed.  If the FreeBSD guys can succeed where Linux has failed ie Install and easy configuration for Wireless and other devices, Linux distributors may have a problem on their hands.
